A Note from Founder Debby de Moulpied
I was born and raised in New Hampshire, a beautiful state known for its diverse geography, and have lived here most of my life. Growing up in a college town, my father used to say that we lived in utopia with being so close to the ocean, the lakes, and the mountains. I took the outdoors for granted while enjoying swimming, sailing, fishing, hiking, camping, skiing, ice skating, and horseback riding. I developed a love of nature, a sense of state pride, and a keen sense of the environment.
In recent years, dramatic changes to New Hampshire's environment have occured. The first hard frost has slipped farther into the calendar year. You can’t be guaranteed to ice skate or to put the bob house out on the lake by Christmas, nor is there any guarantee of snow by Christmas either. In the winter of 2006, Lake Winnipesaukee did not totally freeze for the first time in recorded history. The spring “ice out” date averages two weeks earlier than just 30 years ago. New Hampshire now hosts bugs and viruses it never had before. Our state bird is mostly seen up north now, and the migratory spring birds arrive earlier. The ski and snowmobile industries suffer because of the decrease in snowfall. The bears did not hibernate until January this year. Our crystal clear lakes warm up so much in the summer that E-coli outbreaks are now commonplace. The maple sugar season is shorter and begins earlier. On a hot summer day, the horizon is heavy with a brown haze. Health warnings to stay inside because of poor air quality are not unusual. I could go on, but these dramatic examples of the effects of climate change make a point.
While looking for some recycling containers on the internet, I started coming across environmentally-friendly stores. The more I looked, the more I became aware of a large "green" industry that had yet to become mainstream in our neck of the woods. I was intrigued with the idea that while the organic food industry had become quite well developed, it seemed that the home goods industry had some growth potential and the message needed to get out.
And so, Real Green Goods was born. I want to offer the opportunity for people to have green product choices that are better for the the earth and its inhabitants. Everything that is produced has an impact on the environment and I believe that by becoming better educated consumers, a new appreciation of the link between products and their impact will result. I am convinced that changes in the product choices we make will have a positive impact on the environment. I have put together a wide variety of earth-friendly products that fill your basic needs, a green department store.
Thank you for checking us out and for your concern about the environment. I hope you enjoy shopping online at Real Green Goods and find what you are looking for. And, please feel free to let us know how we’re doing!
Lastly, may I leave you with this thoughtful ancient saying: Leave It Better Than You Found It.
