Organic & Cruelty-free Silk Ties and Scarves "Cruelty-free" is the process of allowing the silk worms to complete their natural life cycle (the moths are allowed to fly out of their cocoons) before using their vacated cocoons for yarn. Therefore, unlike conventional silk, the process of silk-making does not involve boiling and killing the worms. These special neck ties and scarves are hand-woven on bamboo looms and are free from harsh chemicals.

Green Tip
Memorial Day weekend is coming and the easiest and most effective way to save gas is to slow down!
The Union of Concerned Scientists tells us that dropping from 70 to 60 mph improves fuel efficiency by an average of 17.2 percent. Dropping from 75 to 55 improves fuel efficiency by 30.6 percent! And on a 300-mile trip, driving 65 instead of 70 mph but would only take an extra 20 minutes while you save money and spew less carbon. For more gas mileage tips

Also with reference to Memorial Day, if you plan on placing any flowers at grave sites, please consider using compostable materials and avoid the use of plastic.

Dear Reader,
Since our last newsletter, we have been very busy at Real Green Goods selling lots of glass and stainless steel products due to the widespread national media coverage exposing the health hazards of bisphenol A (BPA). BPA is currently being used in enormous amounts to manufacture hard plastic water bottles and to make epoxy linings of metal food cans including those for canned infant formula. BPA has been used in consumer products for decades with assurances of safety from the industry. However, finally just last month in April 2008, the National Toxicology Program determined that BPA may pose risks to human development, raising concerns for early puberty, prostate effects, breast cancer, and behavioral impacts from early-life exposures.

BPA: History and Future
|
BPA was invented over 100 years ago, and even back in 1930 when scientists first discovered that BPA was an artificial estrogen hormone, the chemical industries still began to use BPA in their plastics and for lining metal food cans and other products. For a chronological timeline highlighting the increased use of BPA leading up to April 2008 when Walmart and other retailers finally began pulling BPA products from their shelves, go to Timeline. Independent research has identified that canned baby formula, canned foods, Nalgene bottles, and other clear hard bottles leach BPA. Canada has already taken the bold step of removing products containing BPA from their shelves, which included Walmart removing Nalgene bottles immediately. (Nalgene is manufacturing a new bottle called Choice that replaces BPA with Tritan Copolyester, a chemical that has not been independently tested, which we will NOT be choosing to sell.) For more on "BPA found at unsafe levels in canned food" go to Unsafe Levels
The American Chemistry Council (a trade association of big companies like Dow, Exxon, and Monsanto) continues to say "Human exposure to BPA from can coatings is minimal and poses no known risk to human health." Conversely, The Environmental Working Group www.ewg.org, an independent research organization, tested canned food bought across the United States and found BPA in more than half of them at levels they call "200 times the government's traditional safe level of exposure for industrial chemicals." There are no standards for BPA; it is allowed to be put in anything, and billions of pounds are produced each year. The research showing BPA's gender bending capabilities is shocking. Read more here Gender Benders
Like the philosophy of the European Union, Canada and Australia, our position here at Real Green Goods is simple: better safe than sorry. Until long term studies have been completed with regard to human and environmental safety, chemicals that are endocrine disruptors or show genetic alterations will be sidelined. The EU is continually raising their standards and is applying this better-safe-than-sorry standard to the cosmetics and food industry. Unfortunately, these very same chemicals that are banned in Europe remain in the U.S. market. The business-driven U.S. has a wait-and-see approach. Not only does RGG reject this approach because of environmental and health concerns, we reject this as a long term failing business model as well.

Special Note!
|
Due to the recent BPA publicity, we are doing our best to keep up with the increased demand as our suppliers struggle to do the same. We are anticipating some large shipments as well as some new items to provide customers with safe options. All of the water bottles sold at RGG are made from food-grade stainless steel. We do not sell any aluminum water bottles since aluminum needs to have an inner coating, often an epoxy resin that has been found to leach BPA.
We will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday the 26th

Plastic Follow Up
|
For an Amazing Wealth of Information - What one person can do: Read about Great Britain's first "Plastic-Free Town", an inspiring story of how one person can make a difference. This is one of the best and most comprehensive websites assembled with so many facts, images, and videos all in one site. Be forewarned that many images are not for the
faint-of-heart.
After scrolling down to the VERY bottom of the "Plastic Facts" page, (some of the images are very sad to see) be sure not to miss a humorous video clip with a serious message from the perspective of our friends in the animal kingdom who live in the ocean. Plastic Bag Free |

Pet Body Burden Research
|
A new website, Pets for the Environment, has been created that provides information on the toxic chemicals that our pets are exposed to. Pets are exposed to these toxins the same way human toddlers are: by drinking contaminated tap water, playing on lawns with pesticide residues, breathing in and swallow a lot of dust, and putting things in their mouths. Pet's lives are much shorter than people's which means that they develop illnesses from chemical exposures much sooner than humans. The chemicals in your pets are the same kinds of chemicals in people, and scientists think that horses, birds, snakes and all animals around the country are full of toxic chemicals. The facts are grim, but armed with this information, we can change and make more healthy choices. Here are some alarming facts:
- Pets are polluted with even higher levels of many of the same synthetic industrial chemicals that researchers have recently found in people, including newborns.
- Teflon chemicals are 2.4 times higher in dogs than in people.
- Fire retardants are 23.4 times higher in cats than in people (they lick their fur a lot).
- Mercury is 5.4 times higher in cats than in people.
- These chemicals have been associated with cancer, reproductive and developmental risks, birth defects and thyroid problems. Not surprisingly, dogs have much higher rates than humans of several kinds of cancer (including skin cancer, bone cancer, breast tumors and leukemia), and hyperthyroidism is a leading cause of illness in older cats.
- Other facts, healthy pet tips, and a full comprehensive report can be found on this site.http://www.petsfortheenvironment.org/node/18
- "Pets for the Environment" also has a newsletter you can receive for updates.

At Real Green Goods and online, we offer organic dog treats, organic pet shampoo, organic catnip, hemp leashes and collars and more. Our plush organic wool pile bedding is sewn onto a knitted organic cotton backing (not a sheepskin) and comes from sheep that grazed in fields where no chemicals were added, and wool is also naturally flame resistant requiring no added PBDEs (flame retardants).
