REDUCE CO2 BY "EFFICIENCY FIRST"
|
Co-op America, of which Real Green Goods is a proud member, is a leading Green Organization resource. They recently published an extremely comprehensive article on energy efficiency which has motivated us to motivate you about the subject.
Here's why: "Earlier this year, climate scientists around the world... released reports stating that the world is warming faster than anyone had predicted, and we must act now to bring our emissions to zero by the end of the century."
We don't have time for wind farms, solar farms, and carbon free cars to come to the market. We need to reduce CO2 now and that's where efficiency takes center stage to get the job done - now.
The average home owner can start by saving up to 30% of their energy use - that's both CO2 and money savings. But you need to do it, not just read about it. So let's begin.
1. Establish a baseline. Find your electric bills, study them, and try to reduce your next bill by 30%. A Kill A Watt™ meter can measure your electrical use and monitor any changes you make.
2. Use electricity during "off-peak times", if this is an option.
3. Turn off electronics and lights not in use, either by hand, by surge protector, by a smart strip or timers. Smart Strip
4. Avoid second appliances, like two refrigerators. Clean the coils on the one you have and minimize door opening to improve efficiency.
5. Don't cool or heat empty rooms. Raise the cool air temperature and lower the heat temperature.
6. Dishwasher only - skip the drying option. The waste is huge.
7. Change your light bulbs to CFLs; don't wait - do it now!
8. Wash and rinse clothes in cold water.
9. Hang the dryer and hang up your clothes instead. HUGE savings.
10. Fix water leaks even if you are on a well. The pump has to work over time for leaky toilets and faucets.
11. Insulate your hot water heater and lower the temperature or switch to instant-demand types of water heaters.
12. Check your windows and doors for leaks. If you can see daylight, you're in trouble!
Remember to consider ENERGY STAR labeled appliances, use ceiling fans, programmable thermostats, and solar water heating. These changes will result in big energy savings, CO2 reduction, and money in your pocket.
ENERGY STAR fact: Did you know that your home can cause twice the greenhouse gas emissions of a car?
The typical household spends $1,900 a year on energy bills. With ENERGY STAR you can save up to 30%. Look for this logo ----------- >

RGG'S STAR ENERGY EFFICIENCY GAL
|
Gabrielle N., a high school student at Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA), recently won the PEA Challenge for reducing monthly energy use. And the cool part is she said, "It was easy". From the changes she and her family made, their electric bill dropped a whopping 29%. Here are some simple things they did:
1. No clothes dryer
2. Switch all light bulbs to CFLs
3. Turn off everything not being used
4. Take shorter showers
5. Spend time in one room watching one TV instead of spread throughout the house
6. Turn down the heat and dress warmer
7. Use daylight for work and reading
Gabrielle also said it brought the family together, both physically and emotionally. PEA gave her a $200 gift certificate to Real Green Goods, a big congratulation to this inspiring teenager. Now it's your turn!

PLASTIC UPDATE
|
- The United States remains one of the few developed countries that allow toys to contain phthalates (pronounced "thal-ates") which some scientists say may cause infertility in boys. The European Union (EU) has banned these substances in products meant for children.
- Phthalates help make plastic toys, like rubber ducks and teething rings, soft and pliable. Read this Article, and watch a first rate video.
Have You Thought About This?
- A flame retardant, that was taken out of children's pajamas more than 30 years ago after it was found to cause cancer, is being used with increasing regularity in furniture, paint - even baby carriers and bassinets - and manufacturers are under no obligation to let the public know about it. "

350.org has been launched! What does this 350 number mean?
-350 is the most important number on the planet. Scientists say that unless we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million (PPM), we will cause huge and irreversible damage to the earth.
- 350 is the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide.
